Herniated Disc Diskbrack

In the case of a herniated disc, there are several treatments that can be
done, however the majority will heal themselves within six weeks, without
surgery, if they simple stay off their feet and 'take it easy'. Studies have
found that after 12 weeks, 73 percent of patients showed a great deal of
improvement without surgery.
If treatment is required, it can come in a variety of forms including
lumbo-sacral support belts, bed rest and physical therapy.
However, there are cases, especially when whiplash has occurred, where
chiropractic or osteopathic manipulations must be done. This is due to the
fact that patients with a herniated disc are at risk for making the
condition even worse through every day movements.

Frequency
Any disc in the spine is susceptible to being herniated, however the two
most common forms of herniated discs are cervical disc herniation and lumbar
disc herniation, with lumbar disc herniation being the most popular, often
causing lower back pain and leg pain. This form of herniated disc is 15
times more likely to occur than cervical disc herniation, which occurs in
the neck. Most often, cervical disc herniation occurs in the case of
whiplash.
There are several locations on the spine that have no discs, and as a
result, cannot be affected by disc herniation. These two locations are the
sacrum and the coccyx, which are two cervical intervertebral spaces on the
spine.
Typically, someone between the age of 30 and 50 will have a greater
frequency of disc herniations because the nucleus pulposus is still in a
gelatin state. However, as a person agaes, the nucleus pulposus dries out
and the risk of herniation is reduces greatly.

Types of Herniation
There are three main types of disc herniation, with the first being cervical
disc herniation, which we have already discussed occurs in the neck.
Herniation between the sixth and seventh cervical vertebral bodies is the
most common type of disc herniation for this type. Symptoms of this can
affect the skull, neck, shoulder, arm and hand.
The next type of herniation is the Thoracic disc herniation, which are very
rare due to the stability in that region, which is the middle of the spine.
Typically, the herniation will be similar to cervical disc herniations at
the top of the thoracic discs, and similar to lumbar herniations at the
lower part of the thoracic.
The lumbar disc herniation occurs at the lower part of the back, usually
between the fourth and fifth lumbar vertebral bodies. Symptoms of this can
affect the lower back. Buttocks, thigh and foot or toes. Typically, the
sciatic nerve is the most commonly affected by this type of herniated disc.
Those who suffer with this will experience a tingling feeling in their legs
and a burning feeling in their hips.
