Recovering From the Effects of a Messy Divorce

Marriage puts an obligation on them to give emotional support to each other in day-to-day life as well as merge their financial resources so as to improve their living standard and buy assets for the home. In an ideal family, the spouses are supposed to have children and provide them with a safe and secure place where they can grow up into emotionally healthy adults.

Marriage can thus be heavenly if things play out well. However, there are many marriages which do not work out as planned and lead to divorce. Indeed, in some Western countries such as the US, the divorce rate is touching an all-time high of 50 percent. There are many reasons for this, social as well as personal. Over the last few decades, there has been a sea-change in social mores and customs. The society has become more liberal and the threshold of tolerance has gone up. Divorce is no longer considered an assault on social conscience. The laws related to divorce have kept pace with this attitude and they have been relaxed a lot, making it possible for a married man and woman to split in as little as three or four months if both of them agree to part ways amicably.

Then there are personal reasons. Women have become educated and have the same career opportunities available to them as men. This has given them financial independence and they today do not hesitate much in walking out of a claustrophobic or unsatisfying marriage. With their salary, they are perfectly capable of looking after themselves and their children, all on their own and do not really need men for their financial well-being. Most marriages break up due to emotional or physical abuse in the relationship as well as extramarital affairs.

Regardless of why it occurred, divorce can never be a happy occasion for anyone. It signifies the end of a dream and is a public admission of the fact that the spouses failed in their relationship at a personal level. Divorce leads to some extremely negative feelings. Many partners develop a guilt complex and begin to blame themselves for the split. Others go on slow burn and keep gnashing their teeth in anger at their partner, cursing him or her for breaking the marriage. Quite a few partners slip into depression at the bad turn life has taken. Some harbour feeling of revenge and use the legal proceedings to teach their spouse a lesson.

If left unaddressed, these negative feelings can play havoc with the emotional and psychological well-being of an individual, even pushing him or her to the verge of committing suicide. Remedial measures are obviously required to come out of this dangerous rut as soon as possible so that one can move on to other phase of life. There are many things you can do for this purpose, some of which are given below.

Leverage Your Circle of Friends

Now is the time to lean on your friends, relatives and neighbours for emotional support. You can make it a point to socialise with them every weekend, such as having dinner together or watching a movie. Having a good time with friends and discussing your problems with them lightens the mood and helps dull the pain of divorce that you are going through. Such socialising is great for your children too who may similarly be undergoing feelings of depression and insecurity after one of their parents has walked away from the family.

Join a Support Group

There are many divorce support groups existing today comprising of recently divorced people who are undergoing the same difficult patch in life as you. Taking their membership offers a great way to strike up new friendships. You can also take comfort from the fact that you are not alone in your predicament and there are many people who are facing similar problems. It is not uncommon for many individuals to develop romantic relationships in these groups and get married again!

Keep Yourself Busy

An idle mind is the devil’s workshop. If you sit idle, your mind will keep wandering to the problems of your divorce. It is thus best to keep yourself occupied with some work or hobby. You should join a charity or a club of your choice or take up some hobby such as gardening. Joining sports such as swimming or tennis and Yoga is also a very effective way of reducing stress and unburdening your mind of negative thoughts.

Seek Professional Help

If nothing else works, take professional help. The counsellors have special knowledge and are trained to help you gently get rid of all the caustic emotions residing inside you due to your divorce.
